The Shower Chair That Doesn’t Look Like a Shower Chair: Meet Dorica

The Shower Chair That Doesn’t Look Like a Shower Chair: Meet Dorica

When you picture a shower chair, you probably know exactly what comes to mind: metal legs, plastic seats, medical-looking hardware, and something you’d rather tuck away when guests come over.

But why?

A shower chair serves an incredibly useful purpose. Sitting while showering can make the bathroom safer and more comfortable, help conserve energy, and give you a place to pause when standing becomes tiring or difficult. Yet somewhere along the way, we decided that anything designed to provide a little extra support also had to look like medical equipment.

Dorica by byACRE challenges that idea completely.

It’s a shower chair that doesn’t really look like a shower chair. In fact, it doesn't have to be a shower chair at all.

And that’s exactly why we love it.

A Different Kind of Shower Chair

Dorica was designed around a wonderfully simple idea: support shouldn't come with a label.

Use it in the shower because you'd feel more comfortable sitting. Use it during a period of fatigue or recovery. Sit on it while getting dressed. Keep it in the bathroom because shaving your legs while balancing on one foot has officially lost its appeal.

You don't need to reach a certain age or fit into a particular category to appreciate a comfortable place to sit.

Dorica simply provides support when you want it.

Its sculptural shape feels much more like contemporary furniture than traditional mobility equipment, so it can stay right where you use it instead of becoming something that needs to be hidden away.

Why Dorica Works So Well in the Shower

A beautiful stool is one thing. A stool designed to function around water is another.

Dorica is made from water-resistant Expanded Polypropylene (EPP) and has non-slip feet to help keep it stable. Its curved surfaces are designed to allow water to run off rather than collect on the seat.

It also feels warm and soft to the touch rather than cold and clinical, which is a small detail that can make a surprisingly big difference in a bathroom.

And then there's the weight.

Dorica weighs just 1.9 kg (about 4.2 lb).

That makes it exceptionally easy to pick up and move. You can place it in the shower when you need it, move it to the vanity while you're getting ready, or carry it into another room without wrestling with a heavy piece of equipment.

Lightweight doesn't mean flimsy, either. Dorica has a maximum user weight of 200 kg (approximately 440 lb).

Two Pieces. Three Heights. A Very Clever Design.

This might be one of our favorite things about Dorica.

Dorica is made from two interlocking pieces that can be arranged into three different heights:

10.6" | 15" | 19.9"

No tools. No complicated adjustments. Simply configure the two pieces based on how and where you want to use Dorica.

That versatility matters. The height you prefer for sitting in the shower may be completely different from the height you want while getting dressed, putting on shoes, working in the kitchen, or using Dorica elsewhere around the house.

And despite weighing only 4.2 lb, Dorica supports users up to 440 lb.

That's part of what makes the design so clever: incredibly light to move, remarkably strong when you need it.

Instead of forcing your life to adapt to one object, Dorica adapts to you

From Shower Chair to... Just About Anything

Here's where Dorica becomes particularly interesting.

Take it out of the shower and it doesn't suddenly become useless.

It can become:

  • A seat while getting dressed
  • A shoe-dressing stool in the hallway
  • A kitchen perch while preparing food
  • A side table beside your sofa
  • A supportive seat while gardening
  • An extra stool when guests come over
  • A step when you need additional reach
  • A bathroom stool while doing your hair or getting ready

Then tomorrow, it can become something completely different.

Because it's water-resistant and designed for both indoor and outdoor use, Dorica can move from the bathroom to the kitchen to the garden without accumulating a houseful of single-purpose products.

Who Is Dorica For?

The easy answer?

Anyone.

One of the things we appreciate most about Dorica is that it isn't designed around an age, diagnosis, disability, or stage of life.

Someone experiencing fatigue may appreciate having somewhere to sit while showering or preparing food.

Someone recovering from an injury may temporarily need more support.

A pregnant person may want to conserve energy while completing everyday tasks.

An older adult may appreciate having a stable seat nearby.

Someone else may simply think, I'd rather sit down while I do this.

All of those are perfectly valid reasons to use supportive design.

And when that support happens to look beautiful in your home, even better.

Rethinking What Mobility Products Can Look Like

As a therapist-owned company, this is one of the reasons Dorica feels so aligned with what we want Reflex Mobility to represent.

We believe supportive products should help people continue doing the things they want to do, but we don't believe those products need to announce themselves as "mobility equipment."

Function and beautiful design are not opposites.

A product can make showering easier and still complement your bathroom.

It can provide additional support and still feel modern.

It can be useful during one stage of your life and serve an entirely different purpose during another.

Dorica doesn't ask you to identify as someone who "needs a shower chair."

It's simply there when sitting makes something easier.

The Best Shower Chair Might Not Look Like One

There will always be situations where a traditional shower chair with specific clinical features is the appropriate choice. Dorica isn't about pretending those products aren't valuable.

It's about creating another option.

For someone looking for a lightweight, water-resistant, non-slip and beautifully designed shower stool that can continue being useful throughout the rest of the home, Dorica is something special.

At just 1.9 kg, with three adjustable configurations and seemingly endless ways to use it, this isn't a piece of equipment destined to live permanently in the corner of your shower.

It's furniture.

It's support.

It's a seat, a step, a table, a pause.

Today it might be your shower chair. Tomorrow, you decide.
